6 tips for hiring the right roofing contractor

Advice

Hiring a roofing contractor can feel complicated. Since a new roof is an investment you’ll only make every 20 to 50 years, you might not be familiar with the roofing contractors in your area. As well, cost can vary drastically from Option A to Option B. For example, Handyman Joe down the street will probably offer a lower price than a professional roofing company. Luckily, there are some simple guidelines to follow to make sure you hire the right roofing contractor.

1. Ask for proof of insurance

Contractors should be able to offer proof of liability insurance and good standing with the Workers’ Compensation Board. If you go with an uninsured contractor, you risk litigation if a roofing employee sustains an injury on your property.

2. Research Better Business Bureau accreditation

Before hiring a roofing contractor, see if they are accredited with Better Business Bureau by visiting BBB.org. A roofing contractor needs to uphold high standards of accountability to be accredited. If a contractor isn’t listed on BBB.org, it’s best to stay away.

3. Ask for warranties in writing

Two more things a roofing contractor should offer you: a manufacturer’s material warranty and a labour warranty. Both should be in writing. Without these warranties, you might be out of luck if something goes wrong with your new roof.

4. Ask for references and read online reviews

In a sense, it doesn’t take much to start a roofing business: a truck, a cell phone, tools, and a ladder. But a business with those barebone essentials doesn’t necessarily make it a good or trustworthy business. By asking for references and reading online reviews, you can see for yourself if others have had a positive experience. Doing so can also help you avoid roofing scams.

5. Avoid cheap options

As a consumer, it’s natural to want the best price possible. But when it comes to your roof, your house’s first layer of protection against the elements, going for the cheapest option can put your entire house at risk. For example, improper installation or inappropriate roofing products can lead to leaks and damage to the interior of your house.

Realistically, the cost of professionals installing high-quality, appropriate roofing products on your house can only go so low. If in doubt, follow this old adage: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

6. Communication is important

When experiencing communication issues with a contractor, it’s easy to think, “Well, as long as they get the job done, that’s all that matters.” However, communication is key to a job getting done well. If a prospective contractor isn’t answering your questions or getting back to you in a timely matter, they aren’t making an effort to fully understand what your roofing project demands.
